Isn’t the thesis of Abundance by Ezra Klein, Derek Thompson closely related to the thesis in this article? Interesting that there might be some convergence on where, how institutional reform needs to occur vs the chainsaw method.
Klein and Thompson correctly diagnose the problems but their treatment plan fails to acknowledge the power of entrepreneurial capitalism to solve them. Problems created by bureaucrats don’t get solved by more bureaucrats.
1. College tuition and fees is meaningless as it does not account for financial aid (non student loans)
2. Hospital services numbers *may* be suspect too if they are, as they often are, “per visit”, rather than “per procedure” (number of procedures per visit has been increasing over time)
One of your most useful pieces ever. It rips COTI to shreds. The only Time Prices that went up were in areas dominate by government regulation and subsidiies.
As usual the ideology is decided and then the data is found to ‘prove’ the ideology.
It’s like watching a man buy a Harley because he just wants it and then post-rationalises the decision with cope like ‘it’ll hold its value’ or ‘it’s art’.
